The galjoen, South Africa’s national fish, is found only along the coasts of South Africa, Namibia, and Angola and is red-listed as Near Threatened by the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative. While it cannot be sold, recreational anglers with a permit may catch up to two per day, often enjoyed in South African cuisine with lemon, mayonnaise, and garlic butter.
