Kelp, the largest algae, grow up to 13mm per day and form extensive underwater forests along the West Coast. With sturdy holdfasts, long stipes, and nutrient-transporting tissues, kelp is harvested for alginic acid, used in food, toothpaste, paint, ink, and as a fertilizer.
