The Bo-Kaap’s origins date back to the 1760s when numerous “huurhuisjes” were built and leased to slaves by Dutch colonists. By law, all houses had to be white, but when this law was lifted, freed slaves were allowed to purchase the properties and promptly painted them in the bold, bright colours we know and love today. The Bo-Kaap Caszh (abbreviation for casual) series celebrates this expression of freedom and individuality.

Siren II is a conceptual exploration of the mythological sirens mentioned in Homer's Odyssey within a Western Cape context. The Cape is known as the Cape of Storms, renowned for its heavy storms and many shipwrecks over the centuries. Otherworldly beings, sirens were believed to be half women, half bird (depicted by the lesser double-collared sunbird), the sirens would lure sailors to shore with their beautiful songs, only to dash their ships against the rocks in the stormy seas and perish.
